With Cosmelan

Depigmentation System

Our most intensive treatment for stubborn pigmentation, melasma included

Cosmelan is the treatment we turn to when pigmentation has proven unresponsive to gentler approaches, and it's one of the most effective depigmentation systems available.

How it works

Pigmentation happens when the cells that produce melanin go into overdrive. Cosmelan works by calming those cells down. Its active formula reduces the enzyme that drives melanin production, so existing pigment fades, and new pigment is slowed at the source. That two-part action, lifting what's there and suppressing what's forming, is why it works on pigmentation that surface treatments can't reach.

It's suited to sun-induced pigmentation, hormonal pigmentation from pregnancy or menopause, melasma, and acne marks.

What's in it, and why

Cosmelan doesn't rely on one hero ingredient. It works by coming at pigment from several directions at once, which is part of why it reaches what single actives can't. The formula combines:

  • Azelaic acid to calm the pigment-producing cells and reduce inflammation

  • Kojic acid and alpha-arbutin to interrupt melanin production at the source

  • Phytic acid to gently exfoliate and brighten while protecting the skin

  • Niacinamide to slow the transfer of pigment to the surface and support the barrier

  • Retinol speeds cell turnover, so pigmented cells are shed and replaced faster

Each one targets a different step in how your skin makes and holds pigment. Used together, under professional guidance, they do what a single brightening serum never could. Your therapist will talk you through exactly what's being applied and why at your consultation.

What the program involves

Cosmelan isn't a single appointment, and the result depends as much on you as on us. It runs in three phases.

1. Preparation: You'll prepare your skin at home with prescribed products and with a few in-clinic treatments to strengthen the skin barrier in the lead-up, so it's primed to respond.

2. Your in-clinic treatment: We apply the Cosmelan depigmentation mask in the clinic. This is the intensive step that kick-starts the correction.

3. Home maintenance: This is where the result is genuinely made or lost. You'll apply prescribed creams twice daily to draw out and hold the results, and we'll see you for LED light therapy on days 3 to 5 and again around day 14 to support your skin through the process.

The honest part about downtime and commitment

This is the bit other clinics skim over, and we won't. In the days after your mask, your skin will likely be red, tight and flaky as the old pigment works its way out, and it takes real commitment to the homecare and sun protection that follow.

Skip those, and the pigmentation will return, which is true of all pigmentation but especially here. We take you through every step so nothing surprises you, and we'll only recommend Cosmelan if your skin and your circumstances are right for it.

For melasma in particular, we'll be clear that this manages and dramatically softens the condition rather than curing it for good, because the hormonal triggers behind melasma don't simply switch off.

Frequently asked questions

What is Cosmelan?
Cosmelan is a professional depigmentation system by Mesoestetic. It corrects existing pigmentation and slows the formation of new pigment by reducing the activity of the cells and the enzyme responsible for melanin production. It's delivered as a three-phase program: preparation, an in-clinic mask, and a structured home maintenance phase with follow-up LED.

What ingredients are in Cosmelan?
Its depigmenting action comes from a combination of azelaic acid, kojic acid, alpha-arbutin and phytic acid, supported by niacinamide and retinol. Each works on a different stage of melanin production, which is why the treatment is effective on pigmentation that single-ingredient products can't shift.

What pigmentation does it treat?
It works on sun-induced pigmentation, hormonal pigmentation linked to pregnancy or menopause, melasma, and post-acne marks. It's particularly valued for melasma, which is one of the hardest types of pigmentation to treat.

Is there downtime?
Yes, and it's worth planning for. In the days following your in-clinic mask, your skin will likely look red and feel tight, then flake as the pigment lifts and sheds. We'll tell you exactly what to expect and when, so you can time the treatment around your life.

Will it completely get rid of my melasma?
It will dramatically improve it, but we won't promise it's gone forever. Melasma is driven by hormones and heat, which don't switch off, so it's a condition we manage and soften rather than cure. Cosmelan is one of the most effective tools for doing that, and your home maintenance and sun protection are what keep it at bay.

Why does home maintenance matter so much?
Because it does at least half the work, the in-clinic mask starts the correction, but the prescribed creams you apply at home over the following weeks and months are what draw out the result and hold it. Cosmelan only delivers its full result for people who commit to that phase, and we'll be upfront about that before you start.

Is it safe for darker skin tones?
Cosmelan is used across a wide range of skin tones, and suitability is one of the key things we confirm at your consultation. Deeper skin tones require a considered approach to avoid worsening pigmentation, which is exactly why this treatment starts with a proper assessment rather than a booking.

How soon will I see results?
Most people see significant fading within the first few weeks as the skin renews, with results continuing to improve over the maintenance period. Your therapist will give you a realistic timeline for your pigmentation at your consultation.
